Partial Transcript: So when did you find out that you were going to be going to Vietnam, and how did you feel when you found out?

He was initially an executive officer (XO) of the Headquarters Company. Some of his responsibilities including paving roads and helping with infrastructure. Savage later became a platoon commander. He describes the different roles he took on, relationships with the Vietnamese, and interactions with those under his command.
